Performers are called upon to make inspired and creative choices all the time. Part of your job is to make sure you hone your skill for allowing those moments to happen! Sometimes you need a spontaneous creative spark, right this moment. Other times, you have the capacity to plan creativity, so that you can launch inspiration in a resourceful way, at the right moment. It feels great when it happens. And it’s scary when it doesn’t. Rehearsals are full of both types of creative choice making. So are business meetings, sales pitches and sports. How do you make sure your body/mind/spirit energy triad will work together so you get the most inspired choice available to you, in the moment you need it?
Try this simple idea: Just ask, “I wonder…” ‘I wonder when I will see the solution to this issue?’ ‘I wonder who can help me adjust my swing?’ ‘I wonder where I’ll get the energy for the show tonight?’ ‘I wonder what will make the difference in this meeting?’ ‘I wonder what Big Idea I can still find here?’ ‘I wonder how to do this with integrity and inspiration?’ ‘I wonder how the best solution came to me?’ ‘I wonder how I’ll make the time to do all that…’ ‘I wonder where the money is coming from?’ |
When you frame things in this way, you literally get both sides of your brain working together. Better still, you are directing your subconscious to find the answer to your question. That’s how and why a solution will pop up out of “nowhere.” Most people are in the habit of framing creative questions differently. They attack their subconscious with “motivational” statements. They don’t realize how FULL of negative energy they are! Right on the heels of the “motivation” comes the “truth” of what they believe and THAT negative belief is what the brain will work to make happen: ‘I have to figure out this moment before we open (otherwise I’ll get a bad review).’ ‘I better get a coach to fix my swing (because I’ll tank otherwise)’ ‘I have to get my act together (but with no sleep, I’m doomed).’ ‘I hope this meeting isn’t dull (they always are and this will be no different)’ ‘I have to cover all my bases (because I know there’s an obvious solution everyone else sees and I’ll lose credibility).’ ‘I don’t want to make a mistake/do this wrong.’ Sound familiar? Now compare these statements with the first statements. They are two different ways of approaching the same issue. Feel the difference? Ahhhhh!

Harness the Energy Around You!
When you ask your mind/body/spirit energies to problem-solve with negative energy, you get what you ask for: - You miss the moment. - You blow your swing. - You’re too frazzled to do a good job. - The meeting isn’t productive. - You do it “wrong.” Without even realizing it, those are the solutions you are asking your energy to bring to you! I WONDER is such a powerful tool for finding lost objects (“I wonder where I put my car keys,” instead of “I have to find my lost keys!”). It’s a great tool for finding new ideas (“I wonder what will help in this moment?” instead of “We’ll never make that work”). And it’s one of the most powerful tools I know for finding reserves of energy, inspiration and creativity inside your self (“I wonder where the spark is now?” instead of “I better show up with the goods I’m running out of time!”). TRY it out for yourself! Discover the power of asking your energy to work for you and what you want. You’ll love the results!
